The world class guitar duo from Hawaii, HAPA.
HAPA created a unique style of music by blending traditional Hawaiian sounds with brilliant performances on the acoustic guitar, making a sensation right from the start.
Singer songwriter Barry Flanagan visited Hawaii from New York for the first time in 1980 to study the Hawaiian language and song writing. After hearing the powerful performance of slack key guitar virtuoso Gabby Pahinui’s performance, Barry dives into Hawaiian music and forms guitar duo HAPA with Keli’i Kaneali’i, a native of Hawaii.
The duo’s debut album HAPA released in 1993 was a smash hit selling over 2.5 million copies, and their name became recognized worldwide. The duo received 6 awards at the Na Hokuhanohano Awards the following year, including Best Album, Contemporary and Most Promising Artist, making them one of the top artists in the Islands.
Nathan Aweau joined HAPA between 2003 and 2010 after the departure of Keli’I, their album MAUI released in 2005 won Best Album and Contemporary Album in 2006. Ron Kuala’au became the third vocalist of HAPA. Currently Kapono Nāʻiliʻili, nominated for Most Promising Artist in 2015, is HAPA’s vocalist since 2014.
